If you already have someone in your business who you would like to develop through a marketing apprenticeship — or you have recruited specifically for an apprentice position — the next step is choosing the right apprenticeship standard and training provider.
Does the apprenticeship fit the role?
The first consideration should be whether the apprenticeship actually matches the job. Using the Level 3 Multi-Channel Marketer apprenticeship as an example, the learner should have genuine opportunities to develop across areas such as content creation, marketing campaigns, research, data and different marketing channels.
An apprenticeship is designed to develop new knowledge and skills, so the role needs to give the learner enough scope to apply what they are learning in the workplace.
How is the training actually delivered?
You should also look closely at how the provider delivers the programme. Ask what training looks like in practice, how regularly the apprentice receives coaching, how progress is monitored and how involved you will be as the employer.
Apprentices are also entitled to protected off-the-job training during their normal working hours, so you should understand how the provider structures this and what will be expected from your business.
Does the provider specialise in marketing?
Another important consideration is the provider’s specialist knowledge. A provider delivering dozens of completely unrelated apprenticeships may offer a very different experience from one specialising specifically in marketing.
Look at who will actually be teaching and coaching your apprentice, their industry experience, the quality of the curriculum and whether the programme reflects how marketing is carried out today.
What support will you receive as an employer?
Finally, consider the support surrounding the apprenticeship. Good providers should help you understand eligibility, prior learning, funding, onboarding and your responsibilities as an employer rather than simply enrolling the learner and leaving you to figure everything else out.
There is no single provider that will be right for every business. The key is finding one whose programme, delivery model and expertise fit both your apprentice and the marketing role you want them to develop into.
