The government portal, originally known as the Digital Apprenticeship Service when it launched in 2017, now operates under the name Apprenticeship Service. It serves as a platform for employers to discover, finance, and oversee apprenticeship programmes.
As an employer, you can use the Apprenticeship Service to oversee apprenticeships and Training Providers. Through this platform, you can:
- Access funds and check account balances for apprenticeship levy;
- Discover and manage training providers;
- Administer your apprenticeship schemes;
- Handle apprentice recruitment.
Setting up a Digital Apprenticeship Service Account
To create your account, you’ll need:
- A valid email address;
- Government Gateway login details for your organisation (accessible through your payroll or finance department);
- For organisations with an annual pay bill below £3 million, the accounts office reference number and employer PAYE scheme reference number can be used;
- Authorisation to add PAYE schemes and accept the employer agreement on behalf of your organisation;
- Additional details such as Companies House Number, Charity Number, or Public Body Name may be required if the service cannot automatically match your organisation or if the manual search is desired.

When you need this account
Ultimately, you’d need this account to manage your PAYE schemes. However, when it comes to apprenticeships, you’ll need to link this account with your chosen apprenticeship providers. Without doing this, providers will be unable to provide their services as there is no way of showing the UK Government that your two organisations are linked.
